Signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth and the Chief Scientist | 8 June 2021

The Minister of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth and the Chief Scientist for Research and Innovation signed a Memorandum of Cooperation for matters of common interest such as the nurturing of Research and Innovation culture in schools and the development of the necessary skills in students in order facilitate their connection with the Research and Innovation ecosystem.  The objective of the MoC is to create a framework of cooperation and through joint actions and synergies to:

  • modernise the education system in a way that promotes Research and Innovation,
  • develop the necessary research and innovation skills in students,
  • strengthen and upgrade the education system and particularly in the Secondary Technical and Vocational Education,
  • enhance the development of innovative entrepreneurship in Cyprus by the younger generation,
  • strengthen the efforts to transform innovative ideas into sustainable business ideas, with a global perspective,
  • enhance Cyprus’ innovation performance.

During the signing of the Memorandum, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth Mr. Prodromos Prodromou, stressed the importance of the cultivation of research and innovation skills in children from the Primary, Secondary Education as well as from the Technical and Vocational Education.  He also added that this is an objective that primarily serves the transition to the information society and technological upgrading, equipping young people with the necessary skills to become active citizens.

Mr. Prodromos Prodromou also mentioned that “education is the most important and essential tool of the society in order to lead us to the era of innovation and research. Integrating research and innovation in education (Curricular Programmes), processes (Teaching Methodologies), is a key priority for us and is consistent with our plans to upgrade our educational system. He added “the cooperation with the Research and Innovation Foundation is an excellent opportunity to achieve our goals through the Foundation’s Programmes and Actions”.

The Chief Scientist  for Research and Innovation Dr.Nicolas Mastroyiannopoulos, stressed the importance of cooperation “to feed the inspiration and give the competencies to young people to become an integral part of the Research and Innovation ecosystem.  “Through reforms, investments and targeted Research and Innovation actions of the Recovery and Resilience Plan”, we will provide the students, and in particularly the students of the Technical and Vocational Education with the necessary skills and competencies. Our goal is to encourage the young generation to follow the path of science and entrepreneurship, thus contributing to the interconnection of the Technical and Vocation Education with the Research and Innovation ecosystem, and to form a bright future for our country”.
