Opening Address – CS – MEDICAL FORUM

Opening Address
Mr Demetris Skourides
Chief Scientist of the Republic of Cyprus 6th Cyprus International Medical Forum

The representation of the President of the Republic of Cyprus by the Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation and Technology, Mr. Dimitris Skourides

Health Minister representative Mrs Froso Georgiou Philippou

Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of the Republic of Cyprus representative

Dr Petros Agathangelou President of the Cyprus Medical Association Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is both an honour and a privilege to welcome you to the 6th Cyprus International Medical Forum.

I would like to warmly congratulate Codavi International, the Cyprus Medical Association, the Cyprus Space Exploration Organisation which also hosts the strategic infrastructure of the Cyprus Space Research Center funded by the Research innovation foundation, and all partners involved in bringing together such a distinguished gathering of physicians, researchers, scientists, innovators and policymakers.

We gather today at a remarkable moment in human history.

A moment in which artificial intelligence is transforming healthcare.

A moment in which biotechnology and genomics are redefining our understanding of disease.

A moment in which advanced computing is accelerating scientific discovery at unprecedented speed.

And a moment in which medical innovation is creating opportunities to improve both the quality and the longevity of human life.

These developments are not occurring independently. They are converging.

And it is at this convergence that the future of healthcare will be shaped.

Healthcare today is no longer defined solely by hospitals, clinics and laboratories. It is increasingly driven by data, technology, research and interdisciplinary collaboration.

The future physician will work alongside artificial intelligence.

The future researcher will have access to computational capabilities unimaginable only a decade ago.

And the future patient will increasingly benefit from treatments that are predictive, personalised and preventive.

This is why forums such as this are so important.

They bring together expertise from different disciplines and create the partnerships required to solve some of humanity’s most complex challenges.

Behind every scientific breakthrough, every new technology and every medical innovation, there is a human story.

A patient waiting for an earlier diagnosis. A family hoping for a better treatment.

A healthcare professional seeking more effective tools. That is why innovation matters.

And that is why this gathering matters.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Healthcare is becoming one of the most important strategic sectors of the global economy.

Nations that invest in medical research, biotechnology, digital health and innovation are not only improving healthcare outcomes. They are building resilience, creating economic value, attracting talent and strengthening their competitiveness.

This understanding is reflected in Cyprus’s Vision 2035.

Our ambition is to build a more knowledge-driven, innovation-led and globally connected economy.

Research and innovation are central to that ambition.

Healthcare innovation, in particular, represents a significant opportunity for Cyprus.

Our universities, research centres, Centres of Excellence, healthcare institutions and private-sector innovators are already contributing important work in areas ranging from digital health and artificial intelligence to genomics, bioinformatics and personalised medicine.

Our goal is to create an ecosystem where research moves beyond publication and into impact.

Where scientific discovery leads to better patient outcomes. Where innovation creates value for society.

And where Cyprus becomes recognised as a credible hub for research, technology and healthcare innovation.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Artificial intelligence is already transforming medicine.

AI is helping clinicians identify diseases earlier, improve diagnostic accuracy and analyse vast amounts of medical data more efficiently than ever before.

Machine learning is accelerating drug discovery.

Predictive analytics is helping healthcare systems allocate resources more effectively.

Digital health technologies are enabling more personalised care pathways.

At the same time, genomics and biotechnology are opening entirely new possibilities for understanding disease at the molecular level.

The combination of AI, genomics and advanced data science is creating the foundations for truly personalised medicine.

Medicine is moving away from one-size-fits-all approaches and towards treatments tailored to the individual characteristics of each patient.

This transformation has the potential to improve outcomes, reduce costs and enhance quality of life for millions of people.

However, technology alone is not enough. Innovation must always serve humanity.

As we embrace artificial intelligence, advanced analytics and emerging technologies, we must also ensure that trust remains at the centre of healthcare.

Patients must trust that their data is protected.

Citizens must trust that new technologies are being deployed responsibly.

Healthcare professionals must trust that innovation strengthens rather than replaces human expertise.

This is one of the defining challenges of our time.

Europe has a unique opportunity to lead not only in technological capability but also in responsible innovation.

Innovation that protects people. Innovation that respects values. Innovation that strengthens public trust. And innovation that improves lives.

Cyprus is committed to contributing to that vision.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

One of the most important lessons emerging from modern science is that the greatest breakthroughs increasingly occur at the intersection of disciplines.

When medicine meets artificial intelligence.

When clinical expertise meets advanced data science. When biotechnology meets computational research.

And when scientific discovery is combined with real-world healthcare needs.

This is why collaboration matters.

No single institution, organisation or country can solve the healthcare challenges of the future alone.

Progress depends on partnerships. It depends on knowledge sharing.

And it depends on bringing together the best minds from across disciplines and across borders.

This Forum represents exactly that spirit of collaboration.

It demonstrates Cyprus’s ability to convene expertise, facilitate dialogue and contribute meaningfully to international scientific exchange.

It strengthens our healthcare and research ecosystem. It creates opportunities for future collaboration.

And it reinforces Cyprus’s growing role as a trusted partner in research, innovation and healthcare.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The future of healthcare will be more predictive. More personalised.

More preventive. And more connected.

But above all, it must remain human-centred. Technology will continue to evolve.

Scientific discoveries will continue to accelerate.

Yet the ultimate purpose of healthcare will remain unchanged: To improve lives.

To reduce suffering.

And to create better outcomes for patients and society. That is the mission that unites us here today.

On behalf of the Republic of Cyprus, I would like to congratulate the organisers, speakers, partners and participants for their contribution to this important initiative.

I wish you every success for the 6th Cyprus International Medical Forum.

May the discussions, partnerships and ideas that emerge from this gathering contribute to a healthier, more innovative and more prosperous future for Cyprus, for Europe and for all.

Thank you.
